You can make a quick and inexpensive pot pie supper by spooning any leftover Updated Sauerbraten into individual baking dishes. Top each with a piece of puff pastry and bake at 350F until the pastry is golden.
1 Tbsp shortening
1 1/2 lb round steak, 1/2-inch thick, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 (.75-ounce) envelope brown gravy mix
2 cup water
1 Tbsp dried minced onion
1 Tbsp light brown sugar
2 Tbsp white-wine vinegar
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
6 cup hot cooked egg noodles
Preheat oven to 350°F. Heat shortening in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add steak; cook until browned, about 10 minutes. Remove and place in a medium casserole.
Add gravy mix and water to skillet. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.
Add dried onion, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, ginger, bay leaf, salt and pepper to skillet.
Pour sauce over steak. Bake, covered, until steak is tender, about 50 minutes. Discard bay leaf. Mound hot noodles onto a serving platter. Spoon steak mixture over noodles.
Updated Sauerbraten tip: To speed the preparation time, use a 10-ounce can of gravy or 1 cup leftover gravy and skip step 2.
