If bacon is not a regular item on your grocery list, no need to purchase it just for this Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles recipe. Instead, substitute 3 tablespoons butter, margarine or even vegetable oil for a budget-priced dish.

Ingredients

6 slices bacon, chopped

1 medium head cabbage, chopped

1 tsp salt

1 (12-ounce) package egg noodles

1/4 tsp pepper

1 small onion, chopped

Directions

  1. Cook bacon and onion in a large skillet over medium heat until onion is tender, stirring occasionally. Drain half of drippings.

  2. Add cabbage and salt to skillet. Cook, covered, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is lightly browned, about 15 minutes.

  3. Meanwhile, cook noodles in boiling water according to package directions. Drain.

  4. Add noodles and pepper to skillet. Stir to mix well.

Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles tip: The quickest and easiest way to chop cabbage is to first cut the head into halves. Place the flat side on the cutting board. Use a large, sharp knife to cut the cabbage into thin slices.
